Maria R. Nielsen is a self taught artist. She was born in the south of Denmark. Her cultural background is mainly Danish with a childhood spent partly in Madagascar. The combination of influences from Scandinavia and Africa has created a unique foundation for her art.

Maria Nielsen always strives to paint her emotions. Her instinct is to employ vivid and bold colours. Her subject matter is usually the true female essence and experience. Her work has been construed by some as controversial. The painting shown above "Afterbirth" was banned from a local exhibition.

Her first major exhibition was in June 2007 in her home town in Denmark. The exhibition was called "Two Females" and was a joint exhibition with the artist Katherine Scrivens.

Maria has since exhibited several times in Melbourne, Australia.
